NOAA's Science on a Sphere™ Unveiled at The National Maritime Center
NOAA and Nauticus officials unveiled NOAA's Science on a Sphere™ at The National Maritime Center in Norfolk, Virginia, on June 2, 2005. Science on a Sphere™ uses computers coupled with projectors to display NOAA's global science in an engaging three-dimensional representation of the Earth's features as if they were viewed from space. The Science On a Sphere™ exhibit in Norfolk will be demonstrated to the public and local science students and teachers.
During the ceremony, NOAA chief of staff Scott Rayder and Norfolk mayor Paul Fraim gave keynote remarks. Dr. Alexander MacDonald, director of NOAA's Forecast Systems Laboratory and inventor of the Sphere, explained his vision for Science on a Sphere™ and demonstrated a variety of datasets. Other NOAA and government and city officials also attended the unveiling. According to Scott Rayder, "the NOAA and Nauticus partnership has created the opportunity for NOAA to integrate its science with education and outreach efforts. The new exhibit and NOAA teacher resource center will provide the Norfolk community and its visitors with valuable information about our environment."
Executive director of The National Maritime Center Richard C. Conti also comments, "NOAA's Science On a Sphere™ is one of the most unique tools in existence for presenting the sciences. Our partnership with NOAA is truly a national model and continues to yield dynamic programs and exhibits that benefit the public." NOAA and Nauticus have worked together in recent years on several mutually beneficial projects. Currently, NOAA's National Ocean Service Office, Chesapeake Bay Office, and Maritime Heritage programs are located at the Maritime facility.
