NOAA Leads International Efforts to Use Unmanned Systems for Earth Systems Science

Scientists from the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) as well as other NOAA line offices led a Town Hall meeting at the largest-of-its-kind conference on unmanned observing systems August 6-9 at the Washington D.C. Convention Center. The NOAA Town Hall Aug. 8 was designed to introduce and propel NOAA activities in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), and to make the broad UAS community aware of how and why NOAA is using these systems to fill critical gaps in Earth system research, thereby improving climate and weather forecasts.

The annual conference of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) attracts industry leaders, governments, and user organizations from around the world and features many technical sessions and briefings. AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2007 is the premiere forum for reviewing, assessing, and discussing the successes and shortcomings of current unmanned systems – air, ground, and maritime.

NOAA's involvement in this conference and the Unmanned Aircraft Systems project supports and promotes NOAA's goals in climate change research, Earth observation, weather and water resources forecasting, and ecosystems monitoring and management.
